Daith piercing: the piercing against migraines?

If you're reading this, you've probably heard the rumor about the daith piercing against migraines or you're a curious passerby who wants to learn a little about the daith piercing. Either way, you've come to the right place! Let's start with the basics.

What is a daith piercing?

A daith piercing (pronounced like day-th) is a cartilage piercing, like the many others, but this one is below the smoke piercing, pretty much in the middle of your ear. A hoop is used for this, making your ear extra dainty.

Is a daith piercing dangerous? A daith is like any ear piercing and, as a cartilage piercing, carries its own "dangers" with it. It's up to you to take good care of it, and it's up to the piercer to see if your ear anatomy is adequate for this and set the piercing in the best way possible. But don't worry!

Does the daith piercing help against a migraine

This is a rumor for which there is no scientific evidence. There are several explanations such as the placebo effect or most likely the swelling pressing on an acupuncture point. A daith piercing is pretty much deep in the ear, as close as possible and flat on the ear. A piercing does not stay swollen, our piercers make sure of that. We pierce with sterile needles to have as little swelling as possible, and this way the piercing heals as efficiently as possible. After the healing process, there should be no pressure or swelling. Would you like to get a daith piercing for a headache? We advise against it but ultimately it remains your choice. So for this rumor, there is an ear full of explanations but it is still a fat cool piercing!

How is the healing process?

The daith piercing has an average healing time of 6-9 months like most cartilage piercings. It is a bit more stubborn though because it absolutely cannot stand pressure and can scab for a long time. But it's absolutely worth it, trust me. So it's a piercing you do need to take extra care of! You start with a ring. Like almost every cartilage piercing, it is better to go back to the piercer to change your daith piercing jewel.

Aftercare: how should you clean your piercing?

Aftercare is like any ear piercing. Here is a brief summary:

  • Don't tinker with your piercing!
  • Don't sleep on it. Try to sleep on the opposite side. You don't want your piercing to start growing crookedly or create irritation bubbles.
  • Do not consume alcohol. Alcohol is really a culprit. Your body will want to expel your piercing during the healing process.
  • Don't go swimming for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Rinse the crust every day with running water.
  • Use sterile saline solution 2x a day such as Neilmed Piercing Aftercare.
