Wat are the most popular piercings in 2022?
Thanks to our computerized reservation system, we collect certain data from our customers. This data includes the type of piercing, which allows us to see trends in terms of popular piercings.
So in mid-2022 we took a quick look in the database to see exactly which piercing was the most popular, and to see if we could find out some more interesting facts.
Women or Men?
There is no denying that piercings are becoming more popular every year. However, this is most noticeable in the female population.
In our shop, only 3.5% of customers are male. A whopping 96.5% of our piercing customers indicate that they are female.
Average age of our customers
More than 45% of customers are between 19 and 29 years old. So as far as piercings are concerned, it seems that people become interested in piercings in their teens (about 14% are under 18), and get most of them pierced when they are in their twenties. The second largest group is those between 30 and 39 at 26%. We also see about the same number of 40 to 49 year olds getting pierced than under 18. We have very few clients who are 50 or older. Since that number is not statically relevant, we therefore leave them out of this survey.
Popular piercings among under-18s
Apart from the popular helix and bellybutton piercings, we see that septum piercings are really only in demand in this category and the 40-49 year olds. Other cartilage ear piercings such as conch and tragus are also already getting regular demand among the under 18s.
Most popular piercing among 19- to 29-year-olds
The smiley (frenulum) and conch piercings are only in demand in this age group. We also see here the great popularity of the helix piercing. Still many twenty-somethings also get their navel and earlobes pierced. We also regularly receive a request for a nipple piercing, from both men and women.
Most popular piercings among 30- to 39-year-olds
Nostril piercings are clearly the most popular among 30- to 39-year-olds, but we also see that helix are requested quite frequently. Also noticeable here is that the traditional earring is still in high demand. We also regularly see a demand for a dermal.
Most popular piercings among 40- to 49-year-olds
The regular lobe piercing is the most requested piercing here, but both helix, nostril and daith piercings are also quite popular.
Most popular piecing across all age groups
The most popular piercing in all age groups is the helix piercing. One out of every 4 piercings is that of the helix. This perforation of the upper ear cartilage comes in several variations, namely the forward helix, double helix, triple helix and anti helix.
In second place is the trendy nostril piercing, very popular in the 18-39 age group.
The bellybutton piercing is also still in high demand with equal percentages of 18- to 49-year-olds.
In fourth place is the traditional earlobe piercing with about 14% of customers requesting it.
Nipple piercings are also still popular at about 5%.
