Tragus piercing: the must-knows

A subtle piercing in a place you wouldn't immediately think of: yes, this blog post is about the tragus piercing. A nice addition to your collection of ear piercings. Also heard about the tragus supposedly suppressing appetite? In this post, we unravel the myth. Read on!

What is an (anti-) tragus piercing?

The tragus piercing is on the piece of cartilage that sticks out, in front of your ear hang, about the middle of your ear. Not many people would pierce here right away because they don't know this is even possible. The famous helix and earlobe piercings are always welcome but we also like to shine some light on the lesser known but still loved piercings!

In addition to the piercing tragus, you also have the anti-tragus piercing. This one is directly opposite the tragus piercing, below the conch as well as above the earlobe. Both piercings provide a nice variation between cartilage piercings. Hip & trendy we like but with all piercings there is a rumor like "the tragus piercing really hurts" But...

Does such an anti tragus piercing hurt?

It really is less painful than it seems. However, it is one of the less painful piercings you can get. Don't judge a book by its cover! Still scared of getting pierced? Our piercers will help you and put you at ease. Our Anke, Bloe & Thalia Are experienced and professional piercers with a heart of gold.

Healing process tragus piercing

A tragus piercing is a cartilage piercing, so this is not the same as an earlobe piercing where the piercing does not go through the cartilage. With a cartilage piercing, it will take an average of 6-9 months for the piercing to heal. What is very important, after getting such a cool piercing, is the aftercare! Below you can already read some useful tips.

Do not remove your piercing as it may soon grow closed. Our piercers recommend flushing your piercing 2x a day with a sterile saline solution such as Neilmed Piercing Aftercare. Also rinse the crust daily with running water. But above all, remember: Patience is key! These are already some of the things you should definitely NOT do:

  • Don't tinker.
  • Don't sleep on it. That pressure may cause the piercing to start growing crookedly or cause irritation bubbles.
  • Do NOT clean with alcohol
  • Avoid swimming During the healing process (4 to 6 weeks)

Helps the tragus piercing against appetite?

A not so well-known rumor, but one that does exist, is that a tragus piercing would reduce appetite. The reason lies rather psychological because there is no scientific evidence. It would presumably trigger the accupunture point that reduces appetite. An accupunture point really needs to be pressed, due to swelling during the healing process, for example. But don't believe everything you hear! A piercing will not trigger the accupunture point, nor will the swelling remain. We advise against getting a piercing based on a rumor.
