Piercing again after growing closed

A piercing grows closed if the jewel is taken out too early in the anticipated healing period or if you take it out too long after the healing period. Many think it's a good idea to pierce the hole on your own, but it's not. Find out why in this post.

Having a piercing reset

It is possibly To have a piercing repositioned in the same place on one condition: The old hole must have actually healed. Inksane looks at the period of time the piercing was in there. Was it a fresh piercing that was taken out too early? If so, count about three to four months before we have the piercing reinserted. Was it a piercing several weeks old? Then the piercing must be out for a year before we will re-pierce.

Can you pierce a partially occluded piercing yourself?

We advise against To puncture the hole itself for the following reasons:

  • You don't have the proper materials such as a piercing needle to safely pierce the hole
  • You cannot sterilize the materials (sufficiently) so there are many bacteria present and that causes possible infections
  • Information from the internet is not accurate 100%
  • Without experience, you may puncture the hole incorrectly or crookedly
  • Piercing your own piercing can make it feel more painful
  • You don't have a good view of the piercing; an outsider does

Have a partially occluded hole punctured by a professional. This way you have assurance that it is done correctly and you avoid possible infections. At Inksane we proceed carefully and efficiently. We check, clean and care for the piercing with appropriate sterile materials. Be sure to take a look at our website and meet us team high-end piercesters!

Closing of piercings

A piercing in the healing stage is still an "open" wound. It body must adapt to the piercing and that takes a while. Let your body heal the wound and stick to the anticipated healing time and aftercare treatment. Do not fiddle with it or take it out (for a longer period of time). If you do, the piercing can grow completely closed at a rapid pace. It depends from person to person and piercing to piercing in what speed a piercing grows closed. This cannot be predicted in advance. Some piercings heal faster than others.

Is your piercing healed and under 1 year old? Then you may remove the piercing for max one day. No longer, otherwise it will most likely grow closed. Is your piercing older than 1 year? Then you can take the piercing out for a longer period of time. But know that depending on the placement, a piercing can always grow closed if the jewel is not in it for a long time. For example, a lip piercing can grow completely closed after 1 week without a jewel! Is the hole not closed but shrunk? Pull out the shrunken hole with water-based lubricant and the jewel will fit again.

Due to circumstances, such as school or work, you may need to take the piercing out (during the healing phase). An alternative jewelry to prevent the hole from growing closed is a piercing retainer. Piercing retainers are invisible piercings. Retainers are also used for times when you should not wear metal such as during surgeries or other medical examinations.

I had my belly button pierced by a professional but I forgot to ask what the healing time is.

      Hi Chiara

If your piercer has effectively re-pierced your navel (i.e. with a needle) then the healing time is similar or maybe even a few weeks longer than the first time. That is, 6 to 8 weeks of extra care, good flushing and about 9 months until this 100% heals. It may take a little bit longer because this was a second time piercing so there is some scar tissue.
If the piercing was opened back up (i.e., stretched a bit because the hole shrank but not completely closed), the healing time is around 4 to 6 weeks.
Keep in mind here that these are general guidelines, every body is different. Feel free to stop by if it would take too long in your opinion or want some more advice :)

  2. I had to take out my navel piercing because it wasn't pierced in accordance with my anatomy (my belly folds into my navel and I don't have a "tab"). How long should I wait to get a floating navel piercing from you (if this is possible with my anatomy)?

    1. Anke Labaere

      Hi Lois

This depends a bit on how long you had your navel piercing before you took it out. Was it already fully healed? Then you will have to be patient for a year before we can safely re-pierce. Did you only have it recently (a few weeks)? Then just let it heal for about 8 weeks.

Anyway, we will have to check your anatomy beforehand, because a floating navel without a "lip" can also be risky. Of course we can't judge this from a distance so feel free to visit one of our piercers :)

      See you soon!

      1. Hi!
Thank you for your response! I had the piercing 3 month, but actually not healed at all. It was also rejecting... :/.

  3. Hiya,

I had my tongue piercing for 4 years, had to take it out for surgery but now I can't get it in, what is your advice? and does it hurt more to get it done a 2nd time?

      Hi

Depending on how long your piercing has been out, it is possible that it may not be fully closed yet. The hole will certainly have shrunk a bit, but a piercer has the right materials to safely stretch it a bit and put your piercing back in. Of course, we cannot guarantee this because a tongue heals very quickly. If the hole has indeed already grown back closed you will have to be patient for about 6 months before we can safely re-pierce. This can be more sensitive because we will have to pierce through scar tissue. Feel free to visit one of our piercers, we would be happy to look into this for you.

  4. Hi
I've had my piercing for 7 months now it healed nicely after 3 months, after 4 months I changed it then after a few weeks I had it hooked under my saddle and then it ripped out a bit. I then put my original piercing back in so it could heal properly. Unfortunately that never happened and it got crooked.... Now today I got it caught behind something again and it ripped out even more. Now I was wondering how long I would have to wait to get it pierced again if I took it out in a week's time

      Hello

What piercing would this be about?
If it is torn, it will rarely come back right on its own. If you take your piercing out, we can re-pierce it after a year.

  5. I have had my nose piercing for 3 weeks now and last night it fell out. Now the hole seems to be closed. I can't get it through anymore. What can I do?

    1. Anke Labaere

      Hi

The best thing you can do is to go to a piercer as soon as possible, a piercer has the right material to safely put your piercing back in. Your hole will not be closed yet, but probably already shrunk so it may indeed be difficult to put the jewel back in by yourself.

      Kind regards
      Inksane
